About

I am an independent writer, editor, researcher and consultant and have worked in the UK and international NGO/non-profit sectors for more than 25 years. My areas of expertise include business and human rights, environment and sustainability, human-centred international development, corporate and investor responsibility, civil society strengthening and coalition building. Besides writing, editing and research, my experience includes advocacy, campaigning, policy analysis, strategy, facilitation, and people and project management.

From 2011 to 2021 I led the work of Publish What You Pay UK, the UK chapter of the global civil society coalition working to achieve transparency, accountability, justice and sustainability in the extractive (oil, gas and mining) industries. As part of this work, during 2013-21 I represented civil society on the Multi-Stakeholder Group (national commission) of the UK Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

From 1996 to 2011 I managed people, projects and programmes for three non-governmental organisations: Minority Rights Group International, OneWorld International and the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility. I have authored/co-authored and edited/co-edited several books and numerous reports and other publications. My previous work also includes teaching environment studies as an Open University associate lecturer and editing books for academic, specialist and general non-fiction publishers.

I was educated at Liverpool University, Imperial College London, and Birkbeck, University of London.

Outside work I enjoy gardening, cycling, travel, music, cooking and family life. I am happy to be a Fairphone user.
